Biography of Superstudio
Superstudio was founded by five Italian architects in Florence in 1966: Cristiano Toraldo di Francia (b. 1941), Gian Piero Frassinelli (b. 1939), Alessandro Magris (b. 1941), Roberto Magris (b. 1935) and Adolfo Natalini (b. 1941). This group became the most poetic and incisive to propel Italy into the following decades. Their purely theoretical drawings in the “ Monument Continue ‘ series illustrate their belief that the simple extension of a single piece of architecture over the entire world could ’ bring about cosmic order on earth ”. In the urban context, the New York extrusion extends the city's profile over a section of Manhattan, and grafts nature onto it by reflecting the blue sky in the tops of the buildings. In other designs, white, squared-off, monolithic structures span or cover the natural landscape to assert a “ reasonable order ”. Superstudio saw in this singular law of unification, unlike many modern utopian plans, a way of elevating the natural world rather than erasing it. Declaring itself to be “ an adept of radical architecture ”, Superstudio, and in particular one of its founding members (Adolfo Natalini), triggered a wave of enthusiasm among many students of modern architecture. Like Christo, Superstudio publishes prints and books based on their projects.
