Biography of Alexander Befelein
German painter and engraver Alexander Befelein was born in Bremen in 1952, but spent his youth in Nuremberg. In 1971, he moved to Munichiù where he studied fine arts from 1974 and still lives there today. In 1977, the young artist travelled to Italy, England, France and Yugoslavia to pursue his studies. In 1980, he traveled again through Europe and, at the end of this journey, settled one year (1980-81) in Nice.
During the 1980s, Alexander Befelein made short trips to many cities around the world, ffilling many sketchbooks with renderings of well-known places and buildings in each city. It always starts with drawing, with a play of lines, sometimes strong and raw, but generally sensitive, delicate and light, exploring the theme in a playful way with his pencil.During his travels, the artist developed an interest in Mediterranean architecture. Later trips to Switzerland, Venice and Vienna inspired Alexander Befelein to experiment with the medium of watercolor, which he quickly mastered. It must be considered that the artist remains best known for his subtle etchings of the cities he visited, for his art of counterpoint, capturing in a few delicate lines both the essence of each place and its atmosphere.“What makes the composition so exciting is a virtuoso play with contrasts: light and dark, hot and cold, big and small, suggested set and detail/informal and precise, and so on,” says the artist.Outside the city, his favorite subject, the artist sometimes makes still lifes. Alexander Befelein regularly exhibits since 1977 in many galleries in Germany, Switzerland, France, Austria, Japan and the United States, His etchings and watercolors have earned him international recognition for several decades.
