Biography of Allen Jones
Allen Jones, a British pop-art artist, known for his paintings, sculptures and lithography, was born in Southampton, in 1937. He is living and working in London and Oxfordshire. He studied at Hornsey College of art from 1955 to 1961. In 1960, he became an important member of Pop Art, introduced in England by his predecessor's research, Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi. He was expelled from the Royal College of Art in 1960 ; he was close to R.B.Kitaj, Peter Phillips, David Hockney and Derek Boshier. Allen Jones taught at Croydon College of Art from 1961 to 1963. If he expressed himself by various medias, Allen Jones is particularly well known for his sculptures. His main subject is the woman, turned into… furnitures (table, coatrack, chairs), and a huge part of his work, fiberglass erotic sculptures with fetishist overtones. His anthropomorphic furnitures are a pragmatic vision and an imitation of the world, and the consumer society of that period. His work caused a wave of indignation, in particular from feminist groups. Since 1970, his exhibitions have an immediate huge success all over the world and his artwork is then recognized as « emblematic spirit of the sixties ». In spite of a multitude of scandals provoked by his exhibitions, Allen Jones was voted into the Royal Academy of Arts as a full member in 1986. 50 works of the artist can be seen in Tate’s Collection in London, and his artwork is present in many international museums.
