Biography of Cassigneul Jean-Pierre
Born in 1935 in Paris on the eve of World War II, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul was raised in a family devoted to fashion, a microcosm where Paris identifies with women. Grandson and son of the founders of the Maison de couture Jean Dessès, the young boy will evolve in this atmosphere. He breathes and, at his height, observes perhaps unintentionally but from the inside, this strange cult of woman and elegance. For several decades, the artist has been considered the painter of the «elegant», Parisiennes with a milky complexion, eyes surrounded by black, wearing a lofty head and a dreamy pout. Paintings, oils, drawings, posters, tapestries, they will inhabit all his work, becoming over time inseparable from his name. He joined the Charpentier Academy in 1954 where he followed the courses of Jean Souverbie, then the School of Fine Arts of Paris in which he was admitted in 1955. This classical learning does not prevent him from moving towards a post-Impressionist style, against the tide of the style in vogue in the 1950s and 1960s. He borrows colours from the palette of the Fauves, the flatness of the Nabis, perhaps even inspired by the simplicity of André Bauchant, giving an almost unreal breadth to his portraits and views. He quickly became a member of the Salon d'Automne. Exhibitions followed one another in France, then in the United States, and simultaneously in Japan.Cassigneul’s entire work, dominated by the woman and the places of her childhood, provokes imagination. We also owe him still lifes, bouquets, gardens, groves, which followed the landscapes of his beginnings. There are the landscapes of Deauville and many secondary themes, sailboats, liners, insistent railings, and pets, sometimes or more generally small dogs, presences always erased, silent but warm. The recognition will begin in Japan (150 works on permanent display at the Izu Lake Ippeki Museum), then in the United States (New York, Palm Beach, Beverley Hills, Chicago…) and finally in Europe. In 1987, the City of Paris dedicated a major exhibition to him at the Trianon de Bagatelle. His works are kept in prestigious collections (France, Switzerland, United States of America, Japan, Brazil, etc.). Jean-Pierre Cassigneul has become a kind of ambassador and witness to French grace and elegance.
