Biography of Catherine Cazau
Painter, engraver and illustrator Catherine Cazau lives and works in Châteaudouble (in the Drôme region, near Valence); drawing and painting were an obvious choice for her from an early age. Although her first experience was at the age of thirteen, her very first solo exhibition was held in Crest in 1990. For over thirty years, she was a part-time teacher and full-time artist! Catherine Cazau trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Valence in 1992-93, where she taught engraving until 2005.Although she has been fascinated by many currents in modern art (cubism, dadaism, expressionism, action painting, the informal movement, minimal art, etc.), her creativity has turned towards abstract art. So her tastes turned to artists such as Picasso, Miro, Klee, Tàpies, Hartung, Pollock, Fautrier, Dubuffet, De Kooning, Debré,Tal Coat, Schwitters, Soulages, Clavé, Twombly, Alechinsky... and many others!Catherine Cazau's work expresses itself through the daily traces she finds both in the urban world and in nature, tracking down poetry everywhere. The artist translates her feelings in two interlocking creative modes: engraving (of prints) and painting - in which she uses materials (marble powder, sand, binders, acrylic paint, chalk, etc.).For her prints, Catherine Cazau limits the number of editions; she makes the deliberate choice to create rather than reproduce, the print becoming for her an "enchanting field of possibilities". Always on a spiritual quest, a search for the absolute, the artist wants viewers to stand in the present moment and take an inner journey, inviting them to discover their own space of sensitivity. She likes to quote Marcel Duchamp: "It is the viewer who makes the work!" Some will see physical spaces, bodies, the sea and ocean, deserts and mountains; she needs to see nothing."Her work, by turns of burial and resurgence, reveals itself as a subtle palimpsest, all watermarks," writes Claire Gilson.Catherine Cazau exhibits regularly (Paris, Nice, Antibes, Valence, Switzerland, Sweden...).
