Biography of Dominique-Louis Heraud
The French painter and engraver Dominique-Louis Heraud was born in 1948. Very early trained in black and white photography, he will keep from this time the taste for contrasts and organization of the image. Thereafter, the artist will carry out in parallel activities of painter and engraver.
Engravings and embossings, Dominique-Louis Heraud works by series: birds victims of the delirium of men, the city and its wrecks, nature and landscapes. Refractory to fit into a formatted world, he seeks through breaths and rebellious rhythms to express and then overcome fears and conflicts, and to concretize in images the path to the wonders that nature still offers us.
Among his series, we can distinguish " Les bacchanales ", a succession of fantastic beings, a representation of celebration and drunkenness that stigmatize the loss of reference points that close us to the necessary reflection for a more clement future, " Space - Nature and landscapes ", an abundance that overflows reality, an abundance of foliage where to get lost... and to find oneself, " Abstract prints " with the use of embosssing, images of shadows and lights, a conflict between black and bright-ness ; to these non-figurative images composed of chisel cuts, dry-point claws, aquatints in shades of gray to velvety black, Dominique-Louis Heraud associates embossings in the bright white of the margins as a chaotic expansion of space.
About Dominique-Louis Heraud, Jean-François Jung (artist photographer - Galerie La Fabrique Notre-Dame) writes: "... Dominique Heraud's work seems to me surprisingly devoted to these alchemies between papers, inks and their singular moulds carved by tools chosen in sympathy. If engraving is opposed to painting to aim by essence at reproduction, Heraud, with each image, each figure, even each impression, seems to me to aim at sensitive differentiation, practicing obstinately like a stubborn new attempt. These attempts being driven by ideas, they make this artist, every time, an inventor of forms. »
In addition, Dominique-Louis Heraud has produced fourteen artist's books since 1995, accompanying texts by Baudelaire, Marie-José Bernard or Corinne Hoex with etchings or woodcuts: "Making a pic-ture book is trying to evoke what the words suggest without putting a strict illustration on it, which allows the reader to escape and express himself freely," explains the artist.
Dominique-Louis Heraud lives and works in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.
The artist has been exhibiting regularly for many years, solo and group exhibitions, mainly in France with a few incursions abroad. In the last ten years, his works have been shown in Octon, Castelnau-le-Lez, at the Espace Kasba in Brussels, at the Triennale de Chamalières (2013, 2017 and 2020), at the Carré d'art in Nîmes with a presentation of his artist books, among other places, at the Salon d'Automne in Paris (from 2009 to 2016, engraving section), in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, in Vientiane at the Institut Français du Laos and recently at the Musée des Alpilles in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
