    L’oeuvre picturale d’André Masson est prolifique ; elle se compose de milliers d’huiles sur toile, de sculptures, de dessins, œuvres graphiques, d’objets faits de sable, de plumes, de pastel, de livres illustrés, de décors pour le théâtre, l’opéra ou le ballet. Le dessin tient une place de choix dans cet ensemble. André Masson sera le premier à recourir à la dictée de l’inconscient du dessin automatique auquel se rallieront les peintres surréalistes. « Le moi avait été saccagé pour toujours », écrit-il ; c’est en dessinant que Masson laisse jaillir ses pulsions enfouies. L’artiste est obsédé par les thèmes de la mort, de la violence et de la résurrection, et c’est dans un état de transe et d’abandon à son tumulte intérieur qu’il exécute ses dessins automatiques. Masson confiera que le dessin automatique avait pour lui presque toujours une espèce de soubassement érotique. Il dira, dans un entretien : « Ces dessins m’avaient ouvert un monde ». Le dessin de Masson nous emmène, lui aussi, dans le labyrinthe de ses obsessions.
