Erich Heckel continua à peindre jusqu'à sa mort à Radolfzell le 27 janvier 1970. Il fut inhumé au cimetière du village de Hemmenhofen am Untersee. Comme il est de coutume en Allemagne, après vingt ans, ses restent furent retirés et son emplacement servit à une nouvelle sépulture. Une plaque a été érigée au cimetière en tant que mémorial permanent. En son hommage, avec respect, cette rose.
