Biography of Ken Denning
The Danish painter, draftsman, photographer and graphic designer Ken Denning was born in 1957 in Sonderborg, Denmark. He trained in drawing and various graphic techniques at the Funen Art Academy in Odense in the 1980s.
A landscape painter now recognized, his inspiration obviously comes from his knowledge of the vast rocky massifs of the Faroe Islands and Iceland or from landscape forms sometimes more domestic, as found, for example, in eastern and southern Jutland or on the small Danish island of Fænø. The places from which Ken Denning draws his inspiration are characterized at the same time by the tranquility of nature, by very different forms that follow one another rapidly or by contours that are often marked; they pictorially impregnate the contrasts that the artist likes to use: between the open and the closed, the organic and the linear, the light (often white) and the dark black. The result is a particularly energetic and dramatic pictorial production.
At the beginning of his graphic career, after engraving and drawing were his first preferred means of expression, lithography, silkscreen printing, woodcutting and photography were added to the techniques Ken Denning has mastered for the realization of his works on paper. The artist often uses mixed techniques, a complexity made invisible, often mysterious, always rich in nuances, but full of sobriety.
At first glance as an abstract painter, one can say that the artist is at one with the great tradition of Nordic painting, a silent and rigorous painting. The Danish artist speaks to us about the light of his country; light is primordial here - isn't it in Jutland? -, it varies ceaselessly, giving a great subtlety to his works, bathing them in an obvious serenity where time slowly unfolds with its ancestral rhythm.
Ken Denning has exhibited extensively in Denmark, but also outside his native country, notably in all the Nordic countries; his work is part of many private and public collections ; several of his works belong to prestigious collections such as the National Gallery of Denmark, the Vejle Art Museum, the Art Museum of South Jutland, the Kunstmuseet i Tønder, the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in China, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, the Sasol Art Museum in Stellenbosch, South Africa and the Marianne und Heinrich Lenhardt - Stiftung in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
