Biography of Luc Peire
Born in Bruges in 1916, Luc Peire studies at the Fine Arts Academies of Bruges, Saint-Luc (Gand) and Anvers (1936). The young artist starts working with Permeke considered as a major leader of Flemish expressionism. His first exhibit takes place in 1938 (Bruges). Like Alechinsky and before standing aloof, Luc Peire joins the “Young Belgium Painting” group created in 1945 (a significant group in the history of post-war Belgium art). In the late forties, he spends some time in Italy, Spain and Maroc. He meets Eduardo Westerdahl and the Italian architect Alberto Sartoris (art critic, designer and professor) in 1953. The following year, Michel Seuphor directs him towards geometry. In the middle of the fifties, his work focuses on structures such as networks of vertical lines. “Man is meant to stand up” used to say Luc Peire. Peire settles down in Paris in 1959. With others he sets up the “Mesure” group in 1961. From 1965, Luc Peire is going to make up his “Graphies” in which: contrasts, more or less thick lines of striated stripes and horizontal parallel ribbons accentuate the industrial and mechanical dimension of his works. Luc Peire will also be working on the abstract space concept and etching processes. Luc Peire dies in Paris in 1994.
