Comte de Lautréamont - Salvador Dali.
Albert Skira Publisher, Paris.

4to (33 x 25 cm), loose as issued, cover with flaps printed on the front, black suedin covered folder printed in the spine and black suedin covered slipcase.
One of the most important illustrated books from the XXth century, and first major illustrated book by Salvador Dali. Text of Comte de Lautréamont (Isidore Ducasse), illustrated with 42 mixed-media prints (heliogravures reworked in drypoint), of which 30 in full-page and 12 head- & tail-pieces. Here a copy of the initial printing in 1934. The page that bears the copy number is hand-signed in pencil by the artist. Typography printed by Philippe Gonin and the prints by Roger Lacourière in Paris. Edition : in total 210 copies, all printed on Arches wove paper, as follows : 40 copies numbered from 1 to 40 comprising an extra suite of the prints on which the artist added remarques + 160 copies numbered from 41 to 200 + X copies reserved to the artist and the collaborators ; here n° 77. Regarding the 160 copies, numbered from 41 to 200, only half of them were printed in 1934. When it was published, the book did not met any interest. Short of money, the publisher was forced to suspend the printing and he sold the plates to another Parisian publisher, Henri Petiet. The latter sold them in 1970 to Pierre Argillet (already publisher of Salvador Dali's illustrated books and prints) who could thus ensure the complementary edition in 1974, for which Dali engraved 8 additional plates. Our copy has been printed in 1934. References : Références : Michler & Löpsinger n° 11 to 54, Field n° 34-2, Monod n° 6899. Condition : wears at the vertical edges of the spine folder, few text pages with pale foxing, otherwise in very good condition.
