Biography of Tan Ping
The Chinese painter and engraver Tan Ping is born in Chengde in 1960. In his early life, he is attracted by art. In 1984, he graduates from Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (CAFA), engraving section. He becomes an assistant professor of this Academy from 1984 to 1989. He obtains in 1989 an exchange scholarship of the «West German Cultural Exchange Scholarship Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienste» which allows him to move to Berlin for 5 years. He obtains his «Master of Art » and the title of Professor at the University of Arrt Berlin (section « Free Art »). The artist returns to Beijing in 1994 where he works at the CAFA, rising levels of responsibility in this prestigious institution. Tan Ping is foremost an engraver artist.
His personal style, yet deliberately abstract, brings him quickly international acclaim. He receives several renowned awards and great personal and collective exhibitions in China as in Europe or the United States are consecrated to his art. The artist works on series that mark a profound reflection on the existence of being and a true introspection («Life», the «Gestation», «Growth» etc). The style of Tan Ping is gestural and his profound and enigmatic works have an important narrative component. « In all my works, there is a strong story and this story can be perceived by the viewer as a feeling. Without this emotion, my works are in fact without life » says Tan Ping.
