ITALIAN TRANS-AVANT-GARDE

1979-1990

This movement was formed in 1979 by art critique Achille Bonito Oliva (with the artists mentioned above). It can be related to “Bad Painting” in America (Longo, Morley, etc), and the “New Fauvists” in Germany (Baselitz, Hödicke, etc). These Italian artists revisit and reinterpret the art produced by their predecessors. They present figurative works, with many references to legendary or mythological sources. Their intention to go back to a more “sensible dimension” in painting is obvious; moreover, they wish to break away from the concepts dominating the art scene of the period. The movement gained momentum during the 1980’s and was widely shown in museums and galleries.

Artists not in gallery : Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Nicola de Maria, etc.
