MAGIC REALISM

1935-1980

Magic realism appeared in 1935 as a synthesis of surrealism, Giorgio De Chirico’s metaphysical painting, and the return of realism. It might be referred to as a style more than an actual movement, as it was essentially characterized by trompe-l’oeil, an attempt to meticulously view and describe reality. An atmosphere of strangeness is present in compositions representing unusual situations and totally incongruous objects. Any reference to sexuality, which was a theme dear to Surrealists, is completely missing here. This new painting style introduced a few greats like Balthus, Delvaux, and Amédée Ozenfant after he left the Purist movement.
