MECHANICAL ART

1962-1965

The artists belonging to this group worked from photographies and used the various processes of reproduction available in other media. They obtained a “photomechanical painting” from the enlargement of a detail taken from any classical painting. They favored utilizing classical paintings in unusual contexts. Ads were also a favorite source for their personal works. Jacquet and Rotella gave the movement its name, Mechanical Art, or Mec Art, in 1964. The following year, Pierre Restany opened a show in Paris, “Hommage à Nicéphore Niepce”, which presented a large number of Mec Art works to the public.
