Stamp by Bruno Mendonça
fictional stamp
The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.
When the stamp is really emitted, the artist name is preceded of an asterisk (*).
It is certain that we do not know each stamp emitted for such or such artist; do not hesitate with us to make known them!

Painter, visual artist, performer and poet, Bruno Mendonça was born in Saint Omer in 1953. He came to Nice in 1961. He was only seven years old when he became familiar with the judo and the chess. He went to the high school in Nice and Monaco then he entered the school of the Political Sciences in 1973. He was involved in a variety of competitive sports including table tennis, squash, field hockey. Great traveller, since 1968, he has visited more than forty countries, by car, bike or train.
Bruno Mendonça held his first exhibition in 1973 and his first performances in 1976. For these, he came to Portugal, Zaire, Italy, Congo, Poland, Ireland and Germany. Two thesis were written about his performances and talk about the different « actions » which often last over 24 hours. He produced many performances with musicians, and poets. Since 1972, he has written novels, poetry, story of a performance, criticism for his artists friends, artist books.
Mendonça conceived his first books in 1976 and he created his own publishing house, « Utopia » in 1981. He did more than 150 artist books, each one from 1 to 20 copies.
Since 1985, he has run different workshops in visual arts at the IUFM, at the Free University in Bruxelles. He taught in Nice, Kinshasa, Helsinki, in Paris region and in the southwest. He provided his services in the hospitals with blinds, autistics, in the domains of gerontology where different practices where put into action.
He cooperated for the Performances Festivals at « La maison des jeunes et de la Culture » in Nice-Gorbella (1979,1980,1981), at « Art à la Page », festival for the artist books in Cagnes-sur-Mer (1990,1991, 1992).
In 1991, Mendonça moved to Paris where he lived and worked. He is often said the youngest artist of « l’Ecole de Nice », a movement under Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Arman and later Cesar and Ben.
He died in 2011, household accident victim. Construction, deconstruction, the other, somewhere else, otherwise. He was « art traveller » - Voyageur de l’art - (title of the movie devoted to him by Patrick Rebeaud), insatiable, going to many countries, challenging goals, trying to invent his own civilisation, made with sensations, like a tribute to life.
Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
