Notes of biography

The Swiss painter Hans Erni was born in Lucerne in 1909. He collaborates with an architect before beginning his art studies, in 1927, at the School of Art and Crafts in Lucerne. As a result he becomes a student at the Julian Academy in Paris, then at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin in 1930. In Paris, he meets Jean Arp, Mondrian, Brancusi, Calder, Henry Moore and others. He is strongly influenced by the works of Braque and Picasso.
In 1934, he adheres to the Abstraction-Creation group; it is the following year that he organises his first solo exhibition in Bale, Switzerland. Erni is, in 1937, a founding member of the Allianz association. He travels a lot in Europe, Africa and the United States. Painter of overflowing activity, Hans Erni participates in numerous collective exhibitions, in France and abroad. Several solo exhibitions definitively mark the discovery of his work, from immediately after the war (Lucerne, Winterhur, Rotterdam, Genève, Chicago, etc.). From the 30’s Erni produces important mural compositions.
His graphic work abound, his illustrations as well, often with a great richness; it is he who accompanies Eluard in ‘Sommes-nous deux ou suis-je solitaire?’ (Are we two or am I alone?) From ‘Au Vent d’Arles, 1959’, a work that the poet considers his greatest work of his vast production! Enri, who is interested in ceramics and theatre, equally write and give many conferences.
In 1977 the Hans Erni Foundation is created. In 1979, the Erni Museum, in Lucerne, opens its doors, a museum that houses a large retrospective of his work. Always marked by his incredible dexterity for drawing, his enormous production, that embrace the all the genres and all the techniques, placed between abstract and figuration, often tinted with surrealism.

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
