Stamp by Jacques Servant
fictional stamp
The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.
When the stamp is really emitted, the artist name is preceded of an asterisk (*).
It is certain that we do not know each stamp emitted for such or such artist; do not hesitate with us to make known them!

A tribute to Jacques Servant
. ., il y a du feu dans ses œuvres." - Sophie-Hélène Martin
Notes of biography
Born in Bordeaux in 1937, Jacques Servant keeps still vivid memories of his childhood in the valley of Lot St Martin-Labouval. The man (the artist) keeps in memory the wonderful light of these sites deep within his soul. Servant moves to Paris in the early 60s, he takes classes at the Academy of Fine Arts and concurrently works at Conrad Kickert, deutsche painter who teaches him the techniques of old masters of his country (1960-1965).
Soon after, beginning from 1963, Servant exhibits his work at the Salon of Independents. He travels, spends some time in the Netherlands and Germany, studying the old masters and the German Expressionists. A first solo exhibition is held in Paris in 1971 ("60 drawings in ink", House of the Aude and Roussillon). The artist is forty, when, in a desperate act of "liberation" destroys his work resulting in more than fifteen years of creation.
In the mid-70s, Servant carries numerous researches in the art of watercolor; it becomes his mode of expression, gradually acquiring full control, while finding his "own way". He now regularly exhibits in France and abroad.
His first trip to Mexico, in 1976, marks him forever and is followed by several more trips to that country whose history and culture he passionately loves, a country whose landscape and civilization now inspire his work. Jacques Servant exhibits several times in Mexico (Mexico, San Miguel de Allende, Valle de Bravo); his works is exhibited in Port-au-Prince (Haiti, 1990).
The artist then works on geometric patterns, pantheistic, playing transparency effects that allow him the technique of Chinese ink and watercolor. The artist also creates over time, some original prints (etchings and serigraphs), particularly within the portfolio. Artists who dedicate their exclusively privileged time to watercolors are rare; Jacques Servant is one of them, not less.
Disappearing in Paris recently, in 2007, Jacques Servant leaves behind him - and to our wondering eyes - a considerable work on paper of uncommon consistency, the work of a lifetime full of sensitivity, exacting and of a great beauty.
Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
