Notes of biography

Jean-Pierre Tanguy is born in Paris in 1945. He is not yet two years old when his parents, follow their dreams of adventure and encounters by joining a circus. Tanguy's childhood is marked by this lifestyle out of the ordinary in where freedom rhymes with friendships. His whole life is influenced by those years spent in the Verdine (caravan of gypsies). Very soon attracted by the drawing, his work, like his childhood, is made of travels, meetings and transmission.
In 1965, he comes out with his diploma in Applied Arts in pocket. Three years later, the "events" (1968) make him change path; the young man decides to join the School of Fine Arts in Paris and devotes himself to engraving and painting. Jean-Pierre Tanguy teaches the rudiments of the art of engraving, art in which he expresses for several decades now with great skill (dry point, engraving, aquatint, etching, etc.). He graduates in 1972 and two years later, Jacques Lagrange, engraving foreman at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, asks him to become his assistant; he becomes a teacher (he is still today a professor in that institution).
The artist exhibits; he is attracted by the work of painters such as Maurice Estève, Nicolas de Staël and Pierre Soulages, painters who influence his work. Tanguy is then very close to Jacques Lagrange, of course, but also Gustave Singier and Olivier Debré.
The year 1988 is marked by his exhibition "Ten years of printmaking workshop with Jean-Marie Granier (who replaced J. Lagrange at the head of the printmaking workshop). That same year he is invited to the Festival of Asilah (Morocco), it is for him a period of intense activity.
In 1989, the first exhibition of Jean-Pierre Tanguy is organized in the United States (Retrospective Gallery, San Diego). The following year, the artist is invited for 5 months to give courses and lectures at the University of Mimar Silam in Istanbul (Turkey). In 1991, Tanguy flies for the first time in Asia at the request of the Embassy of France in Malaysia, he gives a set of courses in universities in Malaysia and many exhibitions follow (Shah Alam Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia , for example). As he takes the habit in his travels, the artist himself eats signs, smells, colors and music. This experiment is repeated in 1993 in Laos, a country where Tanguy receives the mission of setting up a printmaking workshop at the National Superior School of Fine Arts in Vientiane.
Many solo exhibitions in France and abroad, show his painting and printmaking. Similarly, Jean-Pierre Tanguy regularly participates in important public events (Salon of May, New Realities, Saga of Paris, Madrid Estampa, Art Expo in New York).
The artist is defined as: "Both feet in the ground, hands in the ropes, his head in the clouds." His memory of painter only exists through the drawing, rhythm, music and color. He is currently preparing a book of engravings of Venice with Italian artist Franco Vecchiet. Venice, another special place of his travels and dreams, the city where he exhibits at the International Scuola Grafica in 2002.

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
