Stamp by Miguel Kohler-Jan
fictional stamp
The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.
When the stamp is really emitted, the artist name is preceded of an asterisk (*).
It is certain that we do not know each stamp emitted for such or such artist; do not hesitate with us to make known them!

Notes of biography
French painter Miguel Kohler-Jan was born in Paris in 1929, on his father side he has Alsatian background and has Uruguayan origins on his mother side.
He completes his education at Louis Le Grand High School, then graduates from Law School at La Sorbonne in 1955. When done with his studies, he realizes that his true passions are Art and South America. That is when he leaves for Uruguay and studies Plastic Arts in Montevideo.
Meanwhile, he gets involved in archeological works in different places in South America and increases his knowledge in archeology in different museums of different countries ((Uruguay, Peru, Panama, Chile and Bolivia). During all of his travels, he discovers the wide range of cultural treasures that will influence his work all along his artistic career. At that time his work is figurative, expressing all the aspects of his life surrounding him and shaking up his imagination. His first personal exhibition is organized in Montevideo in 1964.
Miguel Kohler-Jan settles in the local cultural environment and definitely moves to Montevideo. Very quickly he becomes Fine Arts commissioner for the Uruguayan governmental Committee. He sets up many international exhibitions promoting French young artists, occidental artists, and East European artists.
In 1968, the artist is selected to represent Uruguay in Monaco for the IVth International Contemporary Art Great Prize. He then gets the First Prize. Later he becomes member of the Plastic Arts International Association for the UNESCO.
Miguel Kohler-Jan starts working in France in 1969 (Salon d'Automne). For this event the city of Paris acquires one of his works.
The artist lives in Paris during the early 70s. That's when he decides to give up painting for etching. The Aztec art becomes more important in his creative life. He is also fascinated with numerology and the symbolism it expresses. His immersion in the etching world confronts him with the mastering of colors game on paper, the use of ink in etching and the combination of xylographies.
In the middle of the 80s, Miguel Kohler-Jan settles in the South of France in Nice. As an artist, it's a new start with sand creations. Sand becomes his ingredient he uses for etching or for unique compositions. The artist now uses everything he can find in the nature while letting totally express his Urugayan background.
During his artistic career, Miguel Kohler-Jan has regularly exhibited his works in France and Uruguay but also in many other countries (Portugal, Puerto-Rico, Cuba, Japan, Germany, Denmark, Brasil, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Norway, China, etc), receiving several awards.
Miguel Kohler-Jan died in Nice in 2011. He was 81 years old.
Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
