Notes of biography

The Parisian sculptor-engraver Philippe Boudin is born in Caen in 1950. After following classical studying, he graduates from the Boulle School in 1970, then from the Superior National School of Decorative Arts in 1972, school where he becomes an assistant to J. Le Marquet from 1972 to 1977.
Until 1988, when he decides to devote himself to sculpture and printmaking, he works at various scenic and architectural projects, including participation with Jean Nouvel (1978-1983) on many projects and competitions.
Over a period of 22 years, from 1974 to 1996, Philippe Boudin, sometimes in collaboration, creates many sets for the theater (for example “ Other horizons ” by H. Pinter on the Avignon Festival and the Theatre Montparnasse, “Letters to a Young Poet” by R. M. Rilke with N. Arestrup in Brussels, then in Paris at the Theatre des Bouffes du Nord, “ In case of murder “ by J.C. Oates at the Theatre of “Rond-Point des Champs-Elysees”, or “The Maids“ by Jean Genet in Avignon, “The Canticle of Canticles” and “Jean de La Fontaine” at the French Comedy). Philippe Boudin takes the direction of the Sylvia Montfort New Square in 1977, is Deputy Director of the Scene at the French Comedy (1983-1985), becoming the production manager of this venerable institution between 1985 and 1988, year of the “ big turn“.
Philippe Boudin dedicates exclusively to art from that date. Autodidact, he is passionate about printmaking and sculpture. Relating to engraving, he makes his debut in the workshops of the City of Paris (ADAC), founded by Jacques Lacourière, which is still led nowadays by Mireille Baltar. The artist sets up his home-studio close to the place where he is trained, seeking his path, experimenting, sharing his experiences. He moves rapidly toward the techniques of etching, aquatint and the carborundum, techniques that best fit his temperament and…soul.
Married in the United States in 1988 with an American Indian (Ojibwa), he has an immense pain of losing his wife five years later (1993); Philippe Boudin carries in her honor the series of “Torsos” in 1994, 72 drawings and 30 sculptures on the theme title.
The artist fells into a deep depression. Since that time, he knows all the stages, going to the most extreme, of the disease; he lives in balance with this fact, having learned to tame what may sometimes exceed his own being.
Philippe Boudin participates, since 2003, in a few collective printing exhibitions. Thus, his work is seen at the “Show Pages” (Paris) in 2004, then at the “Print Month” at Gallery Akie Arichi in 2005 (Paris), at the “XXII Print Show” in Rueil-Malmaison in 2006, at the universe Galery and Marianne Olry’s Workshop in 2008.
One of his prints represented him at the “48th Annual Japan Print Society Exhibition” at Sendaï in Japan 2007.
Passionate man, crazy about art, his work has today nearly 170 “plates" as he calls them. When asked to name a few artists, he mentions the engravers Jacques Calot and Dado, he thinks of Picasso, especially the one who engraves bullfighting, as well as Rembrandt.

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
