The Italian painter and sculptor Emilio Scanavino is born in Genoa in 1922. He is considered an important representative of Italian abstract art from the postwar period. From 1938 he follows the course of the High School of Art Nicolo Barabino. His first exhibition is held in Genoa in 1942. After initiating studies in architecture at Milan, he moves to Paris in 1947, he binds with the Parisian artistic community, including frequent Otto Wols and Camille Bryen. Then becommes a Postcubism painter, these encounters influence him and he finds his way in abstract painting. During an exhibition in London (Apollinaire Galery), in 1951, he meets Francis Bacon whose work permanently influenced his art. Emilio Scanavino not only maintains friendships with Italian artists like Lucio Fontana, Enrico Baj or Roberto Crippa, but also with many artists of the Cobra group as Asger Jorn, Appel and Corneille. Scanavino, during all his life, has an intense activity of exhibitions both public and personal. The artist spends more time in Calice Ligure a workshop that he installs in 1962 and where many contemporary artists meet from 1970 on. Emilio Scanavino dies in Milan in 1986.
