The French draftsman and painter Georges Bru was born in Fumel (Lot-et-Garonne) in 1933. He spent his childhood and youth in Albi; he has lived in Toulon since 1976. Self-taught, he will be a drawing teacher in technical colleges for 15 years, then the next fifteen years at the Ecole supérieure d'Art Toulon-Provence-Méditarranée, until 1993, the age of retirement.
Le dessinateur et peintre Georges Bru, professeur de dessin aux beaux-arts de Toulon de 1976 jusqu’à sa retraite en 1993, est mort le 14 septembre 2023 à Toulon ; il avait 90 ans. L'artiste a été incinéré le lundi 18 septembre, après une cérémonie au crématorium de La Seyne. En son hommage, avec respect, ce coquelicot. "Le vertige repose sur le malaise. Self-taught, he will be a drawing teacher in technical colleges for 15 years, then the next fifteen years at the Ecole supérieure d'Art Toulon-Provence-Méditarranée, until 1993, the age of retirement.
"The lunar, inexpressive faces live on through the looks, stubbornly fixed towards an elsewhere, charged with anguish, melancholy or hardness," writes Danièle Devynck about the strange characters he represents; his universe is his own: few landscapes, human beings, sometimes half-animals whose heads are privileged. The absolute mastery of Georges Bru's drawing will be the mark of the work of this craftsman of the imaginary, at the same time intimate, original and disturbing.
"The line brought me to the traditional drawing, then with time was no longer necessary, becoming a work of chiaroscuro, "he said. The painter seduces by the grace and aestheticism of the drawing, sometimes also by his look on the monstrosity. One thinks of Dali, of this perfection of the line, of this outrageous surrealism which is none other than the realism of our imaginations. Through his works, Georges Bru plunges us into a mysterious, sometimes disturbing universe where man mingles with animal. Strange and singular work where the subjects come out of a misty beyond and bathed in a pale glow have a ghostly appearance.Georges Bru was supported by the Chave Gallery in Vence, which regularly defended his work by organizing numerous exhibitions.In 1993, the artist voluntarily gave up all travels, and practically never left Provence again. In 2000, a major retrospective of his work was organized at the Villa Tamaris in La Seyne-sur-Mer. With his pencil-scalpel, with this voluptuous precision, doesn't the artist look at the beings plunged in the silence like strange and worrying animals? Works by Georges Bru are part of collections in museums such as those in Bordeaux, Marseille, Toulon or Brussels.
