Biography of James Turrell
French-Irish, the American artist James Turrell was born in Los Angeles in 1943. He studied art, history of art, mathematics and psychology before he turned in an art career. In 1967, he exhibited at Pasadena Art Museum works created from simple colored light projections in empty rooms, called « Cross-Corner Projections » and « Single-Wall Projections ». So he funded his concept : leading the spectators to experience the space until self-surpassing. James Turrell is using light as a material : « I'm not an artist of light. I'm more someone who uses light as a material to find out the meddium of perception ». End of the sixties, James Turrell installations, also called « perceptual environnements », are produced with just one material : light, natural or artificial. His happenings, installations - outdoor or inside - all process in an artistic quest which destabilizes our relation with a real world. James Turrell appeals to our senses and plays with perception of the spectator. The artist created installations in France, like the lightening of the Pont du Gard and the Caisse des dépôts et des consignations in Paris. He also took part in visual and audible installations for the exhibition « La beauté » at the Palais des Papes in Avignon. He is working and living in Flagstaff, Arizona (U.S.A) and Ireland.

Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
