  Biography of Jean-Michel Basquiat

  Basquiat is first known as a New York street painter then as a neo-expressionist artist. He is considered by many as a major figure of contemporary art. Very young, Basquiat shows an artistic aptitude. In 1977, he is 17when with his friend Al Diaz, he realizes grafittis by painting on Manhattan slums. In 1980, he actively takees part in the Times Square Show, an artists’exhibition. The following year, René Ricard, a provocative art critic, publishes « L’enfant radieux » (« the radiant child ») in Artforum magazine which contributes to boost Basquiat’s career worldwide. He exhibits with artists such as Keith Haring or Barbara Kruger, makes friend with Andy Warhol. Heroîn addict for several years, He is 27 when he tragically dies from an overdose in 1988.
