Biography of Julian Schnabel
The American neo-Expressionist filmmaker and painter Julian Schnabel is born in New York in 1951. He studies art at the School of Fine Arts in Houston where he graduates, and then at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The artist joins the movement called “Bad Painting” in response to minimalism and conceptual art in the 1970s and 1980s, movement to which he turns his back. He exhibits for the first time in his hometown in 1979 (Mary Boone Gallery) and participates in 1980 at the Venice biennial. His work uses both abstraction and figuration. He quickly becomes an important figure in the American Neo-Expressionist. His paintings are often adorned with collages of diffferent materials. Today his work is visible in the largest contemporary art museums in the world: the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the George Pompidou Center in Paris. His debuts in the movies industries are directly related to his artistic career. Indeed, in 1996, Julian Schnabel begins his career as a film director with “Basquiat,” a biopic about the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Follow many films, including the famous “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” which received many prestigious awards (Festival de Cannes, César, Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination for 2008).

Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
