The artist painter and engraver Patrick Caulfield, was born in London in 1936. Coming from a humble background, he has to work as a worker when he is only 15 years old, then he joins the Royal Air Force. In 1956, he starts to study at the Chelsea Art School in London, where he learns the graphic technics before learning painting. He studies at The Royal College of Art from 1960 to 1963. In 1961, he joins with the group founded by David Hockney, Allen Jones, Derek Boshier and other young artists, who, even they are not called « Pop » at this time, they already back off from the dominant aesthetic, the american abstract expressionism. In the beginning of his first group exhibitions in 1961 and 1962, Caulfield sides to them: his style looks very simple, applying opposite colors in flat paint, and taking motifs from the common daily objets or from masterpieces seen in the museums. These motifs are refined and acted towards posters or comics. So, he is on the same way as the american contemporary artists of the pop-art, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, or Martial Raysse in France. The following decade, Patrick Caulfield builds his work and shows in solo in London and New York, still true to the principles set by himself at the beginning. The color is handled in monochromatic fields and separated by dark rings. In the turn of the seventies, Caulfield ends with this effective stylistic formula too much repetitive. He increases his formats, opens the surface of the canvas to spaces more and more deep. He regularly shows at the Waddington Gallery in Great Britain, at the Tate Gallery in 1981 and 1992, asked by the Covent Garden in 1995 for several orders. He was elected member of the Royal Academy in 1993. Patrick Caulfield passed away in London in 2005.

A tribute to Patrick Caulfield
- Mel Gooding

Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
