A l’âge de 57 ans, le 18 novembre 1952 à neuf heures du matin, Paul Éluard succombe à une crise cardiaque à son domicile, 52 avenue de Gravelle à Charenton-le-Pont. Les obsèques ont lieu quatre jours plus tard (le 22) au cimetière du Père-Lachaise où il repose. Le gouvernement refuse que soit organisées des funérailles nationales. L'écrivain Robert Sabatier : « Ce jour-là, le monde entier était en deuil ». Il repose dans une partie calme et ombragée de la division 97 non loin d'autres figures de l'engagement social de l'après-guerre. « . . . Mon passé se dissout je fais place au silence. ». En son hommage, cette rose rouge.
