Biography of Renato Birolli
The Italian painter Renato Birolli was born in Verona in 1905 into a working class family. He moved to Milan in 1923 and formed an avant-garde group with other artists (Renato Guttuso, Giacomo Manzu and Aligi Sassu). In 1937 he joined the Corrente artistic movement. That same year, Renato Birolli was arrested by the Fascist government and in the following years he abandoned painting to devote himself to Communist propaganda and eventually joined the Resistance during the war. After the war, the artist moved to Paris in 1947 and resumed painting. Under the influence of Henri Matisse and Picasso, his painting style quickly changed, first passing through post-cubism, then moving to a certain form of lyricism mixed with expressionism, to end up with a formula close to the abstract landscapes of the Paris School and in particular Alfred Manessier. At this time he joined the Gruppo degli Otto - which included Afro, Corpora, Moreni, Santomaso, Turcato and Vedova - which enjoyed the patronage of Lioneleo Venturi. His works always evoke nature and are halfway between abstraction and figuration. In his last works, Renato Birolli reached the limits of informal abstraction. Since 1949, he has worked in France, Italy and Belgium, exhibiting frequently in Italy, Germany and the United States. His works are preserved mainly in Italian museums. In 1959, Renato Birolli died suddenly in Milan; he was 53 years old.

A tribute to Renato Birolli
- Renato Birolli
"Il me faut me sentir sujet actif devant le spectacle naturel." - Renato Birolli
- Renato Birolli

Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
