  The father of his father, a man of integrity and passion for art, wasaÒ comrade of Garibaldi. The Italian painter Renato Guttuso of Sicilian origin, born in Bagheria (near Palermo) in 1911, dedicates an absolute passion for freedom. He is considered one of the greatest Italian painters of the twentieth century. Very young, he begins painting and signs his work at the age of 13! As a sartistic teenager, Renato Guttuso attends the workshop of Futurist painter Pippo Rizzo and the artistic circles of Palermo. In 1928, at age 16, he participates in his first group exhibition. Guttuso continues his artistic training in his native island. He forms the "Gruppo dei Quattro - Group of Four" (the painter Lia Pasqualino and sculptors Barbera and Nino Franchina); opposed to academic ideals of the time, he focuses on the freedom of figures in space and the pursuit of pure chromatic, joining the artistic movement "Corrente" (which he contributes to create) and drive evidently from the official culture of the fascist regime. “The social art" of Renato Guttuso matures during the three years he spends in Milan; his political commitment is manifested more clearly in the works of this period. The artist moves to Rome in the early 40s. The painter joins early the Communists (1940); antifascist, resistant from Italian partisans, he fights against the Nazis (1943). His art provokes fierce controversy within the Catholic Church and the Fascist Party. Engaged man, Guttuso is later on an opponent of the Mafia. Working hard, Renato Guttuso leads an intense artistic life (painting, drawing, watercolor, ink, graphic work). From 1967, the image of women becomes an increasingly recurrent topic in his painting. By the sensuality and the violence of his figurative painting, his art does not dissociate from the "country" in where he is born. He bequeaths several works to his hometown, today gathered at the museum of the Villa Cattolica. Renato Guttuso disappears in Rome in 1987.
