Stamp by Nicolaas Warb
fictional stamp
The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.
When the stamp is really emitted, the artist name is preceded of an asterisk (*).
It is certain that we do not know each stamp emitted for such or such artist; do not hesitate with us to make known them!

Of Dutch origins, Nicolaas Warb, pseudonym of Sophie Warburg, was born in Amsterdam in 1906. She disappeared when she was only 50 years old. Abstract painter, she was a student of the Art Academy of Amsterdam.
At a very young age, she decides to move to Paris in 1928. Nicolaas Warb frequents the Free Academy of Montparnasse concerned to study again and to confront other artists. Friend of Jean Leppien, she participates in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles from its beginnings in 1946 and becomes, until its end, a regular at this event. One of her works ‘Jour en Fete’ (Party Day) will pay tribute to her during the 21st ‘Salon du Nom’ in 1956, as well as works by Francis Picabia, Albert Gleizes, Nicolas de Stael, Chaissac, Auguste Herbin, Roger Bissiere and others as well.
In 1946, one of her lithographs is among the twelve for the album published by Charles Etienne in ‘Abstract Art’ (Ed. Opéra, Paris); she is found in the company of Poliakoff, Del-Marie, Hartung, Domela, Schneider, etc. The artist also participates in collective exhibitions of abstract art in France and abroad (Holland, Italy, etc.).
She generally paints her oils on wood panels, often on laminated wood. She will equally produce numerous gouaches on paper. Her inventiveness is elegant. Nicolaas Warb, influenced by Vantongerloo and the constructivists, practices a geometric abstraction. She shows her work in solo exhibitions that are organized in 1947 at the Greuze Gallery and in 1954 at the Colette Allendy Gallery in Paris.
A posthumous exhibition of her works takes place a few years later at the Baria de Beyrie Gallery in 1974. Two of her works were recently presented to the exhibition ‘Aspects of Abstraction’ at the Museum of Modern Art in the 11th arrondissement in Paris in 2005.
Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
